One Wednesday, hour by hour
The day you have stopped describing to anyone
3.04You are awake and you do not know why. Mouth dry. You do the
arithmetic you always do, which is not about your health, it is about how many hours are left,
and the answer is two and a half. You get up, drink a glass of water at the sink in the dark,
notice the dishwasher was not switched on, switch it on, go back to bed. You do not think
something is wrong with me. You think
three beers on a Tuesday, you idiot. Asleep again by 3.20, and it is
not the same sleep.
5.40Alarm. You are not a snooze man. You sit on the edge of the bed
for eleven seconds before you stand up. That is a thing you started
doing about two years ago and you have never mentioned it to a single person.
6.15Out the door. Servo coffee because the machine at home takes four
minutes and you do not have four minutes. The drive is the best part of the day and you know
that is a strange thing to be true.
9.50On site. You are good at this. You have been good at this for
twenty five years. Someone half your age takes the external stairs two at a time and you take
them one at a time, and at the landing you stop for a second that you dress up as checking your
phone. Nobody noticed. You noticed.
14.10And there it is. Two ten in the afternoon, the wall, right on
time, every day. Not sleepy. Flat. You could put your head on the
desk and be gone in ninety seconds. Instead you have the second coffee that you know does
nothing and a chocolate bar you did not decide to buy.
15.20Someone asks you a direct question in a meeting and the answer
is there, you know it is there, and it will not come out in the right order. You cover it. You
have got very good at covering it. Nobody in that room noticed and
you thought about it in the car for twenty minutes.
17.30Home. The good bit and the hard bit in the same ten minutes.
They want you and you have got about forty percent left, so you give them the forty percent and
feel the gap between that and what you would like to be giving them.
18.40A beer while you cook. Then the second one, which is not a
decision so much as a continuation.
19.55Somebody asks you something perfectly reasonable and you answer
it in a voice that does not match the question. You watch it land. You say sorry, or you do not,
and either way you are still thinking about it at half eleven.
21.40Everyone has gone up. You open the laptop again because there is
an hour of the day you did not get to, and this hour is worth about a third of what the same hour
was worth at nine in the morning. You know that. You do it anyway.
23.10You are on your phone in the dark and you have been for
thirty five minutes. You will type something into it that you have typed before. Some version of
why am I so tired all the time, or
normal blood test still tired, or the one you would not say out loud,
which is is this just what 49 is.
And tomorrow you will do it again, and the day after that, and the thing that makes it heavy is
not any one hour of it. It is that you have already been to someone about it, and been told
you are fine.
